2009 Landscape Color Programs

When we ask our clients what they’d like to see in their landscapes, the most common request that we hear is for MORE COLOR!

Without elaborate perennial designs— which can be very high-maintenance and often unruly when not in bloom— the only way to get plenty of color in our Michigan landscapes is with seasonal annuals and bulbs.

Early Spring Bulbs

Tulip, daffodil, crocus, iris and similar bulbs are planted late in the fall to provide the very earliest spring color available.

Summer Annuals

Annual flowers such as begonia, impatiens, snapdragon, and petunia are planted from early May to mid-June. For most annuals, the cost is roughly $22 per flat, including installation, plus the cost of bed preparation, which varies based on soil types, fertilizer types, and planting areas. Bed preparation for annuals includes tilling, introducing compost, and fertilizing.

We also offer hanging plantings and container plantings with morning glories, sweet potato vines, spikes, and many different flowers. Drip irrigation can be added to your current sprinkler system to get the most out of these plantings. These add-on drip irrigation systems can vary in price, starting around $90.

Fall Annuals

Cornflower, cosmos, pansy, snapdragon, sweet alyssum, and other annuals are used for color change in September and October. For most annuals, the cost is roughly $22 per flat, including installation, plus the cost of bed preparation, which varies based on soil types, fertilizer types, and planting areas. Bed preparation for annuals includes tilling, introducing compost, and fertilizing.

Chrysanthemum

“Mums” are installed around mid-October to add even more fall color. These later fall annuals can cost $15-$25 each, including installation, depending on individual plant size. Bed preparation for chrysanthemum is included in this price.

Hay Bales, Corn Stalks, Pumpkins & Gourds

These seasonal decorations are placed on porches and by garages and side doors in mid-October through late November. The cost for these festive trimmings is about $65 to $90 for most homes.

Late Fall Bulbs

As discussed above, tulip, daffodil, crocus, iris and similar bulbs are planted late in the fall to provide the very earliest color available for the subsequent spring. The cost for the late fall bulb planting is roughly $1 per bulb including installation, plus the cost of bed preparation, which varies based on soil types, fertilizer types, and planting areas. Bed preparation for bulbs includes tilling, introducing compost, and fertilizing.
